MSL Therapy for this age group focus on building strong alphabetic principle, symbol to sound correspondence, rhyme, phoneme identification and fine motor skills for handwriting. This therapy is highly engaging as multimodal manipulatives are used to support long term memory and foster an enjoyment of learning.
Pure MSL Educational Therapy is used as best practice for this age group. There is a focus on reading and spelling skills being taught simultaneously. Handwriting, alphabetic principle and sound to symbol gaps in knowledge are identify and corrected. Spelling conventions are steadily introduced and a scope and sequence that affirms fluency, automaticity and long-term acquisition of skills.
The MSL diagnostic assessments determine gaps in knowledge and skill to support all areas of literacy development. Meaningful vocabulary is explored to improve comprehension and reading skills. Personal goals are created in collaboration with the pupil to ensure that their personal goals are met. The scope and sequence of this age group is highly flexible to ensure they ‘go as fast as they can, but as slow as they must’ (Anna Gillingham) to catch up to their peers.
Adult MSL Therapy has proven to be the most effective for English as a second language learners, dyslexia and anyone with reading difficulties. The therapy and skills are guided by the diagnostic assessments and the personal literacy goals of the participant. Gaps in knowledge are identified and a personal program is created to achieve those goals.
